Heel pain

Heel pain is a common foot problem. Pain usually occurs below the heel or just behind the heel, where the Achilles tendon connects to the heel bone. Sometimes it can affect the side of the heel. The pain that occurs under the heel is known as plantar fasciitis. This is the most common cause of heel pain. Pain behind the heel is Achilles tendonitis. Pain can also affect the inside or outside of the heel and foot. In most cases, the pain is not caused by an injury. It's usually mild at first, but it can become serious and sometimes debilitating. Usually it goes away without treatment , but sometimes it can persist and become chronic. Causes include arthritis, infection, an autoimmune problem, trauma, or a neurological problem.

Therapy

A heel protector gives the bottom of the foot better support . Heel pads can help correct foot errors and cushion and support the arch during the healing process. A night splint keeps the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon in an extended position at night and stretches them. Rest is also recommended. Inflammation behind the heel can be relieved with ice , compression and a change of footwear. A heel cushion can provide temporary relief .
