A transfer board is a tool designed to help people move more safely and easily from a wheelchair to a bed, car, toilet, stair lift or other location. A transfer board can also be used for people with reduced mobility, even if they are not in a wheelchair. It is small enough to fit on the seat of a wheelchair, the edge of a toilet or the edge of a bed. The design is sturdy, flat and stable to support the individual as it is slid between the locations. Many boards allow the user to set up and slide their own shelf to increase personal mobility.
Many different transfer board designs are available depending on the need and intended use. Most are made of wood, plastic, fiberglass, or metal, and may or may not have handles or notches for gripping. Others are designed in specific patterns to make them more comfortable for the user. Some are made for a specific purpose. For example, a transfer board may have an end corresponding to a toilet seat , so that the individual can slide on the toilet, use the toilet, and then slide back into the wheelchair.
