New Research: Kundalini Yoga versus Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Anxiety Disorders

The news on anxiety disorders and treatments comes this time from America, where scientists made an interesting comparison. In Flanders, 1 in 8 people suffer from anxiety disorders, characterized by constant worry and fear of mistakes.

Participants were divided into three groups: Kundalini yoga, cognitive behavioral therapy and stresseducation. Kundalini yoga included breathing and relaxation exercises, yoga theory, meditation and mindfulness. Cognitive behavioral therapy focused on influencing behavior by addressing thoughts, while stresseducation informed participants about stress-related effects and anxiety reduction through a healthy lifestyle.

Results showed that anxiety symptoms reduced in 54% of yoga participants, 71% with cognitive behavioral therapy and 33% with stresseducation.

Although Kundalini yoga and stresseducation were found to be effective, the study concludes that cognitive behavioral therapy still provides the best results for anxiety disorders. However, the study emphasizes that it is specific to Kundalini yoga and that both participants and researchers were aware of the group format, which may influence the results. In addition, the majority of participants were women, making conclusions for men more difficult.
